Selling a Florist Business Near Chicagoland: Occasion Data, Delivery Discipline, and Automation Upside

We (Tangent Brokerage) recently sold a florist business in Indiana under a sensitive life-transition circumstance. She closed and is very happy successfully growing the accounts, was able to find that several of the previous buyers seller fell out of touch, were very happy to receive emails and text messages on a specific routine, so that they don't miss Mothers Day, Weddings, Graduations, Proms, Birthdays, hospital and other wellness occasions that are all baked into the future automation while the crew performs the floral arrangements, and the delivery drivers get the product out in a timely manner.  Sometimes, a person from Corporate America, has the culture, vision, technology and strategy on how to execute better than a sole business owner that started and grew the business all for the love of the product and routine that the seller has established.  And, the seller is able to spend more time with her very young daughter.  Very successful conclusion with the exchange, both parties would do it all over again.

Why florist businesses often appeal to corporate buyers

Many florist shops are founded by owners who love the product, the creativity, the customer moments, etc. But, the seller often lacks certain skills that the corporate buyers have from working at a large firm with the latest technology.

Here are some of the holidays that the buyer focused on, by using existing contacts in the seller's data base.  We find that many florist companies are small and ripe for automation from savvy buyers who understand how to boost the culture, success systems and deliverable results...sort of like McDonald-izing the company. Here are some typical events:

  • Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, including prior-year order counts, average tickets, best-selling arrangements, and staffing requirements.
  • Weddings and anniversaries, including planner relationships, venues served, deposit practices, and past client lists.
  • Proms and graduations, especially school relationships, seasonal timing, corsage and boutonniere volume, and delivery or pickup workflow.
  • Birthdays and sympathy orders, where reminders and repeat orders can create dependable revenue.
  • Hospital, wellness, and get-well occasions, including delivery rules, service areas, and any recurring institutional relationships.
  • Corporate and professional accounts, such as offices that send gifts, event arrangements, or recurring lobby displays.

As Tangent Brokerage handled the closing, the buyer later discovered that prior customers who had fallen out of touch were happy to hear from the shop again. Simple email and text reminders helped ensure customers did not miss important dates. That type of reactivation can be a meaningful post-closing growth strategy.

Divorce or life-transition sales require extra care

Some business sales happen because of retirement. Others happen because of health, burnout, partnership changes, or divorce. A sensitive reason for selling does not automatically reduce value, but it does require a disciplined process.

Confidentiality is especially important. Employees, vendors, customers, and competitors do not need to know the business is for sale before the owner is ready. A qualified broker can screen buyers, use nondisclosure agreements, manage the flow of information, and help keep conversations focused on the business rather than the personal circumstances behind the sale.

In a divorce-related sale, sellers should also be aligned on decision-making authority, acceptable price and terms, tax considerations, debt payoff, and timing. The smoother the seller side operates, the more confidence a buyer will have.

We find that many sellers, are even happy to stay on in a part time capacity, but they want their lifestyle to have changes like Vacations, specific days off, time to travel and visit with family.  After the sale, many sellers return on a part time basis.
